DIY Textured Vase (You Won’t Believe How Easy)

Learn how to create your own gorgeous DIY textured vases.

I’ll show you how to create your own Pottery Barn inspired pieces for a fraction of the cost.

I love decorating with textured ceramics. Give me a rustic vase with a sprig of greenery and I feel right at home.  These natural elements bring an earthy calm and style to any space.

And if you flip through the pages of a Pottery Barn or West Elm catalogue at any given time, you’ll learn that this is a look that is not going out of style anytime soon.

Just get ready to pay anywhere from $79-$139 for anything in an earthenware collection. Ouch!

So how can you get the expensive look without the expensive price tag? …You could try shopping around Target or Home Goods for the knock-offs, but you will still often pay upwards of $30 for a single piece that everyone you know also has…

I want to share a fun way to achieve that same artisan look for under $10.

DIY TEXTURED VASE BLACK

What You Need

-Inexpensive vase or jug

Shop at dollar or thrift stores! You may be able to rummage through your existing vases for one that is ready for a makeover. I found this skinny glass vase under my kitchen sink.

DIY TEXTURED VASE BAKING POWDER

The earlier ridged black vase was only $2.99 at a Thrift Shop!!

It is worth checking out your local thrift shops for some really interesting silhouettes. Find inspiration on here. Head to the glassware and decor sections. See if you can find one that is thick and feels heavy. That will give it a more expensive appeal.

-Paint

It doesn’t take too much paint, nor does it need to be expensive. I had leftover paint from a previous Lowe’s paint sample. You could also use dollar paint from the craft store. Choose from the neutral tones family. Think creamy white, gray, black, moss green, or rust to get that natural, rustic look.

-Baking powder

I am willing to bet that this is already sitting in your pantry or cabinet. Easy! It’s the element that creates the matte, textured finish. [I have also seen this successfully done with baking soda if that saves you a shopping trip.]

-Foam paintbrush

This type of brush will easily allow you to cake on the paint mixture. I used a 1″ brush for the smaller white vase and a 2″ brush for the larger black.

Steps for DIY Textured Vase

Step 1–

Thoroughly clean the vase.

Step 2–

On a disposable plate, scoop 1-2 tablespoons of baking powder on one side. Pour equal or more paint on the other side.

Step 3–

Use your foam brush to stir together the paint and baking powder mixture in the center of the plate. It will begin to foam up and create a mousse consistency. Stir slowly so you can control how thick or thin you prefer it to be.

Note– The thicker the mixture, the harder it is to work with, but it will give you more texture.

Step 4–

Apply one even base coat over the entire vase.

Step 5–

Allow it to dry for at least 30 min.

Step 6–

Apply a second coat as needed, adding more baking powder for additional texture if desired. This is where you begin to see the end product and can play with brush strokes to give the effect you want.

Step 7–

Allow it to dry completely for about an hour.

*If you leave the base of the glass interior unfinished, you can still use fresh florals in water. Be gentle when rinsing and try to avoid too much soap and water on the exterior. I think it’s best when used for dried or faux florals!

I love how my DIY textured vases turned out. This is such a simple and fun project! Giving tired glassware a makeover can boost your design aesthetic and give you a unique piece! Plus, your bank account will thank you.
