Jute rugs are easy to maintain. They are generally kid and pet-friendly, too. Unlike other rug materials, dirt and crumbs don’t hold onto to the jute’s woven fibers. This makes clean-ups pretty easy.

How to deep clean a jute rug-
A good shake outside or vacuuming once a week typically does the trick to keep your jute rug clean. However, if you are looking to give your jute rug a deeper cleaning, here are the steps:
- First, completely vacuum the rug- going over the entire area a couple of times. The extra passes of the vacuum will help collect more of the shedding from loose fibers.
- In warmer months, take the rug outside to deodorize and disinfect in the sunshine for about an hour. Setting the rug in the sun on a warm day is a natural method that will help kill bacteria and mites. Drape it over a railing or lay it out in the driveway and flip it halfway through.
- In winter, use a dry shampoo or baking soda instead. Sprinkle the dry shampoo on the rug, spread it out with a broom, and allow it to sit for half an hour. Vacuum, flip and repeat.
Liquids on a jute rug can cause discoloration and should be only be used when absolutely necessary to spot cleaning.
How to spot clean a jute rug stain-
Like most rugs and upholstery, treating the stain immediately is crucial.
–For spills, immediately blot with a washcloth or paper towel. Do not scrub. Then use a small splash of club soda for red spills only.
–For solid messes, use a large spoon or rubber glove to lift as much of the solid up as possible. However, in the case of mud, allow it to dry- it will be easier to chunk away the dirt later.
- Make equal parts white vinegar and water solution to clean the stain.
- Dip a cloth into the mixture and gently blot/scrub the stained area. Do not rub vigorously to avoid pushing the stain further into the jute rug fibers.
- Blot again with a paper towel to dry the area or use a hairdryer. Jute rugs do not do well with liquids, so try to get them as dry as possible following cleanup.
