A Moody Fireplace Makeover

Here are the details for our moody fireplace makeover.

Our Moody Fireplace Makeover

Quickly after getting the keys to our new home, we started painting the walls of the entire downstairs living area. I wanted a warm white rather than the gray color we were limited to in the design meeting for our new construction home.

However this created a problem. Painting the walls white washed out the trim and mouldings. Which wasn’t a big deal, until it came to our white living room fireplace. A fireplace should be a focal feature in a room (and ours was far from it).

So I decided to leverage this situation to create a moody, contrasting design moment. And I love how it turned out!

Before

Originally, I wanted to paint our fireplace a deep olive color. I have been loving greens lately. But after trying out several color swatches, I started to shift my thinking to black instead.

Be sure to apply two coats if you’re testing samples. That second coat always makes the color a little punchier which could sway your decision.

After

During this process we went ahead and upgraded our TV. We wanted something a little bigger to match the scale of the fireplace. I love the Samsung Frame TV that we decided on. Our TV isn’t on all that often, so I really enjoy the aesthetic of the art feature when the TV is off.

There wasn’t much space leftover to decorate the mantle and I didn’t want it to feel cluttered. The candle sconces were just the right touch to make the space feel complete.

Black paint on a traditional fireplace surround has such a classic look. I think it delivered the drama that this room was missing.

Paint color: Sherwin-Williams Greenblack (flat, matte finish)
