The IKEA Hack: Transforming Ordinary into Extraordinary
IKEA is known for its affordable yet stylish furniture pieces, and their Billy bookcases and Havsta cabinets are no exception. With a bit of creativity and ingenuity, you can turn these basic pieces into custom-built beauties that will elevate the look of any room.
Step 1: Planning and Preparation
Before diving into the project, it’s important to have a clear plan in mind. Measure your space carefully and envision how you want your built-ins to look. Consider factors like the height of shelves, the placement of cabinets, and any additional features you may want to incorporate.
Once you have a plan in place, gather all the necessary materials, including:
– IKEA Billy bookcases
– IKEA Havsta cabinets
– Screws and hardware
– Paintbrushes and foam rollers
– Header (1×5) and lattice trim
– Sandblock 240 grit
– Primer
– Paint
Step 2: Assembly and Installation
Assemble the IKEA Havsta cabinets according to the manufacturer’s instructions. We chose to leave off the base leveling screws so the cabinet would sit flush against the floor. Ensure that everything is sturdy and securely fastened together. Once assembled, position the cabinets in your desired location, leaving no space between them for a seamless built-in look.
Next, it’s time to install the Billy bookcases that will sit on top of the Havsta cabinets. Unless your ceilings are 10 ft. or taller, you will need to trim the shelf tops to fit your space. We needed our shelves to fit our 9 ft. ceiling, so we had to cut about 9 in. off the top of the Billy shelves. There are tips on YouTube about cutting particle board without splintering, but you will cover this portion of the shelves with a header- so you won’t see it either way!
Once your shelves are cut to fit your home, put them together as instructed. We have smooth walls and opted not to use the backer boards. Sit the assembled shelves on top top of the Havsta cabinets. Use the provided Ikea L-brackets and screws to anchor the bookcases into the wall studs. Ensure everything is level and properly aligned. For added stability, anchor the shelves to each other.
We used thin wooden lattice and a large primed 1×5 header to frame everything out. The finish work makes a difference in elevating this design, so caulk the seams and fill the holes for a more professional looking built-in.
Step 3: Customization and Personalization
Now comes the fun part – customizing your built-ins to suit your style and needs. We added a center shelf with plywood to break up the full wall of shelving.
Consider incorporating additional features like custom hardware, molding, or battery operated lighting to add visual interest and enhance the overall aesthetic of your built-ins.
Step 4: Painting and Finishing Touches
Once the built-ins are installed and customized to your liking, it’s time to give them a fresh new look with a coat of paint. 1905 Green paint by Magnolia Home is the perfect choice for adding a pop of color to your space while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Before painting, lightly sand the surfaces of the built-ins with a 240 grit sanding block to ensure a smooth finish. Apply a coat of primer to help the paint adhere evenly, then use a paintbrush to apply the 1905 Green paint in long, even strokes. Allow the paint to dry completely between coats, and apply additional coats as needed for full coverage. Consider adding a coat of water based polyurethane sealer to protect your paint from chipping.
Once the paint is dry, your DIY Ikea built-ins are ready to enjoy!
The Final Result: A Space Transformed
With just a few simple steps and some creative thinking, you can transform your ordinary living space into a personalized oasis of style and functionality. The combination of IKEA Billy bookcases and Havsta cabinets, paired with a splash of 1905 Green paint by Magnolia Home, has breathed new life into our room and created a custom looking impressive focal point.
