In this post, I am sharing our winter white Christmas makeover, along with 3 smart ways to do your own Christmas decor makeover without spending too much money.
Last year I decided I wanted to go with a new theme of Christmas decor in our home. Type in ‘Winter White Christmas Decor‘ on Pinterest and you’ll see exactly why I fell in love with the idea of a revamp.
Like any good newlywed, I gratefully said yes to basically any Christmas decor hand-me-downs in years past- so free or inexpensive became our Christmas theme in those earlier years of marriage. After all, it can sting a bit to spend all that money on brand new Christmas decorations that will only be up for a month (or 3 months- you know who you are!). But after several years of putting those to good use, we were ready to pull the trigger on a dreamy Christmas refresh.
Whether you are starting from scratch or doing a full makeover, this post highlights 3 tips for decorating for Christmas while sticking to a budget.
Shop flocked pinecones
Tip no. 1: Shop through what you already have.
We’ve already covered the value of accepting lovingly used Christmas decor from parents or family that’s offering it up. This will help you get a good start. On the flip side, you may now find yourself in the position to bless someone else by passing along the pieces you no longer wish to use.
Regardless of how you acquired your current Christmas decorations, chances are you have some existing pieces that will work with the new look you are envisioning.
Even though all of my original ornaments were green and red, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had two boxes of white balls, among other odds and ends, that would continue to serve my Christmas aesthetic, but in a new way.
Shop knit stockings // pinecone garland
Tip no. 2: Price compare Christmas decor at different stores.
Visit your favorite home decor stores to compare prices and hunt for hidden gems- I love Home Goods, T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s… But be sure to visit their sister store, Ross, first for the very best prices. I can’t tell you how many times I have found the exact same items as T.J. Maxx over at Ross for several dollars cheaper, which adds up!
Hobby Lobby’s Christmas selection is massive and is almost always 50% off (65% off the week before Christmas). Also, they start setting out Christmas decor in late summer/early fall. So if you are one of those Christmas in July kind of people, you will have ample time to slowly start purchasing items without blowing the budget all at once.
Go to Walmart for the decorating basics like lights, command hooks, etc.
Don’t forget to price compare options on Amazon. Often you can save money by shopping online because it is easier to monitor your budget as you add items to the cart.

Shop tree collar // rattan star topper // glitter icicles // beaded garland
Shop snowflake ornaments
Tip no. 3: Shop the after-Christmas sales on decorations.
Plan ahead for your Christmas decor makeover. Instead of trying to do it all at once this year, wait for the massive sales that run immediately after Christmas for absolutely huge savings. This will save you TONS of money and be that much more exciting when you go to get it all out next Christmas.
This is exactly what I did the year before giving my Christmas decorations a makeover. Plus, with old decor still out and fresh on your mind following this Christmas, you will be able to decide what needs to be put back into storage for future use versus what you can go ahead and donate as you prepare to make this transition.
To avoid everything being picked over, aim to check out those marked-down items no later than that last week of December.

Obviously, Christmas is a wonderfully joyful decorating theme in and of itself. But if you love interior design and home aesthetics like I do, it can a lot of fun to change things up and play with different looks or new trends for Christmas decorations.

P.S. Truthfully, even with my Christmas decor makeover, I have kept pretty much all of my old decorations as well. Rather than being completely replaced, they have just been relocated into other areas of the home. As my collection grows, I can let the joy of Christmas trickle into every room.
