DIY Built-Ins and Window Seat

The playroom has been my area of focus for the last month. That is thanks in large part to the construction of our DIY built-ins and window seat.

We’ve allowed this to be a slower process. Working on the project during toddler nap times, evenings, or any free time on weekends.

But I do think the whole thing could be completed in one long weekend for anyone determined enough to knock it out quickly.

We decided to break it up into phases. And, thankfully, it really wasn’t as difficult as I thought it might be!

Our Process for DIY Built-Ins and Window Seat

We went to a local home improvement store to see about cabinet options. Using shallow upper cabinets for the base gave us the storage we needed without taking up too much space in the room.

This is not a terribly large room that we are working with, so I didn’t want to overwhelm the space with giant built-ins. And for that reason, I didn’t feel that wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling built-ins would be necessary.

A platform base, center wood spacer, and plywood overlay unified the first section of the built-ins.

Next, Zach got to work on constructing the shelves. He assembled this part separately and then attached it to the cabinet base.

Okay, just have to brag on my husband for a second. I am so thankful for his sweat-equity and ability to bring my visions to life.

I love the bead-board backing we used on the shelves. Something about it is just so sweet for a playroom 🥺 plus it added some dynamic texture.

Everything really came together perfectly once we added trim pieces and edging to the unfinished plywood. This iron-edge birch banding made it so easy / shop here /.

All that was left was caulk, wood filler, and paint.

The paint color is Jogging Path by Sherwin-Williams. I love how this neutral ‘greige’ color has a sage undertone.

I am so excited to share a full playroom reveal, now that our DIY built-ins and window seat are complete! Stay tuned 😊
