Selecting light fixtures that coordinate throughout an entire home can be a little overwhelming. I am speaking from experience. We are in the process of building our new home. From the very start, we knew that we’d quickly want to swap out the builder-grade lighting for fresh fixtures that were more in keeping with our style.

With endless options at the click of a button, it can be tricky to know where to begin. So here is a way to visualize how things will look.

Keep reading to find out how you can confidently select coordinating light fixtures for your home. This tip will help you have fun with your design plan and give you coordinating lighting that you love!

.

What to keep in mind when coordinating home lighting-

Should light fixtures match throughout the house? No, not exactly. But here is a tip to help you find the right balance.
.
When selecting light fixtures to go throughout the home, think about it this way. The lighting in your home is like an extended family. From room to room there should be some similar characteristics tying your lighting together. Start with a primary design style that you wish to build upon. And don’t be afraid to mix up metals or textures. Explore a variety of options to help you decide what you gravitate towards.
.
Every family should have a quirky cousin or eccentric aunt. These are the bold or unusual lights that add personality in your home. It would be pretty boring for an entire family to be exact copies of one another, do you agree?
.

Coordinating lighting in an open floor plan-

When coordinating lighting in an open floor plan, it’s especially important to mix things up. Choose contrasting styles so each area can have its own defined moment. Lighting that is too similar from room to room will take away from the character of your home.

.

My #1 tip for coordinating home lighting (or any interior styling)-

Use a simple presentation platform like Canva or Google Slides to brainstorm your design plan. In this case, it’s the place to dump screenshots of all of the lighting you are considering. This will allow you to visualize how everything will look together.
.
I love how these tools allow you to layer photos. This will help you get an idea of how a light fixture will look in a specific room of your home.
.
Select larger scale lighting first. Overhead lights are an important focal feature that help set the tone for any room. Choose chandeliers or pendants that will inspire the design for the rest of the space. Then layer with accent lighting. Eye-catching sconces and lamps create dimension that feels effortlessly inviting.
.
Here are some examples from my Google and Canva design boards. Both are free and easy to navigate on a desktop.

.

So remember, it’s okay to play with different design styles when coordinating home lighting. But blend and balance is key. Keep your primary style in mind. That palette will create a sense of harmony and serve as a guide to coordinate your lighting from room to room. This approach to home lighting is sure to make your space feel curated and personalized.

[…] We had our design meeting about a month after we signed the contract to build our home. We were able to make upgrades and custom select every detail. And for some of the options we didn’t prefer, the lighting selection, for example, we stuck with the basic builder-grade and plan to update that ourselves later.
