Little Girl’s Room Wall Design
As we finished up our son, Holden’s, nursery, I was immediately ready to begin designing our older daughter’s room (despite being only a few short weeks away from giving birth 😆).
We have been in our new home for over a year and, at the time, I hadn’t hung the first thing on Eleanor’s walls. Cue the mom guilt. So especially after seeing every little detail come to life in her brother’s new nursery, I felt more motivated than ever to give Eleanor a special space.

As Eleanor is approaching three years old, I felt this is a good age for a natural transition from her own nursery to a “big girl” room anyway. I want to give her a fun, yet classic, design that will age with her well for the next several years.
The early stages of this design have been executed with a board and batten wall treatment, paint, and wallpaper. Here are the details for our toddler girl room wall design.

Three-Quarter Board and Batten Wall Details
In addition to the wood pieces, you will need a level, miter saw, nail gun, caulk, and wood filler for this project.
We used 1/4 in. unfinished pine board to create the look of board and batten. I have used this thinner board material everywhere in our home. It’s less expensive and lines up flush with traditional baseboards.
The vertical pieces are 1-1/2 in. x 1/4 in. with a foot-wide spacing. I recommend using a level tool and a piece of pre-measured wood as a spacer when nailing your pieces. This made the process quick and easy!
The horizontal trim is 2-1/4 in. x 1/4 in. It is capped with 3/4 in. decorative molding at the top.
Our walls are not textured, so we didn’t add a smooth board behind the vertical pieces.

Paint Details
The paint color for this room is called Hushed Auburn by Sherwin-Williams.
I see it as a unique, sophisticated color in the red/brown family that pulls moody pink in many lights. I applied it to the board and batten portion of the walls along with the trim and doors.
If you choose this color for your home, expect that it pulls more pink in the day and soft brown in the evening.
We used a flat finish for the paint. Flat paint hides flaws and is forgiving on the DIY painter. Because it doesn’t reflect light, a flat finish can make the paint color look richer and deeper.
Keep in mind that flat paint is best for low-traffic areas. It doesn’t clean as easily as other finishes, so I wouldn’t recommend it for a bathroom or kitchen.
